Inpsiration – What do you do with all of the small scraps and snippets of inspiration from the day? You know, the bits of moments and thoughts that you stash in your pocket, saving for a later that never appears to arrive? Do you empty your pockets and discard the crumpled scraps?
I think I’ve done a good deal of that in my life, discard the small things that I didn’t have 100% energy nor time to develop fully. All or nothing. But I’ve been learning a valuable lesson: all or nothing can sometimes leave you with… well… nothing. When we speak about passion and a drive – “nothing” is not an option for me. Even the smallest of moments can be what fills your heart during times of transition and transformation, and I’m learning to embrace those drops of joy. The drops of inspiration. The drops of beauty. The drive to share and connect. Drip. Drip. Filling me up, ever so slightly.
What fills YOU during the day?
In case you have missed some of my summertime drips and drops of beauty and inspiration, I give you a small saucer filled them.
My Muse
It has taken me nearly 40 years to figure this out, but I’ve realized that just about the moment you think you have everything figure out, things change. Not necessarily bad changes, but a shift from the comfortable groove where you’ve settled. I’m still adjusting to the most recent shift in my life, one that I am beyond grateful for, but the time and space for inhaling and exhaling the creative voice that resonates deep within me has dwindled to small snippets. I’m putting my muse up to the challenge of working with mere scraps of a day. “How badly do you want this?” she turns and asks me. I tell her that this desire to move words on a page, to stretch my thinking, to examine life, to uplift others, and to capture beautiful moments during every changing landscape… that desire fills the space between and in every single cell in my body. “Well then, my dear, snippets and scraps it is!” So… from the snippets and scrap pile of the past few weeks, I give you the parking garage’s changing moods.
The Sun
The sun smiled at me today. The funny thing is, it was while I had my head down in the dark and dreary parking garage. The moral of the story? The light will find you in the most unexpected places; you just have to be open to seeing it. I picked up her sunny, smiling face from the dirty puddle she had fallen into, brushed her off, and placed her on a pillar so others may find her too. Maybe she’ll even find her way back to the person whom tiny hands made it for but until then… I decided it is best to share the light when you find it. P.S. I miss nature.
The Pigeon
They’re a funny little thing, aren’t they? Pigeons. They tilt their head to one side and give you a weirdly blank but intense stare, and then bob along on their way. They seem like they’d be clumsy and clueless, don’t they? Doves don’t get that reputation. But pigeons don’t care. Regardless of what others think of them, they steadfastly deliver their messages throughout history. In war, they had notably saved lives. And what about Today? What message do they send to you? Be as happy as a pigeon with a french fry? Don’t judge a book by its cover? Never be afraid to spread your wings and fly… even if you seem the unlikely of creatures to be graceful. I think I’ll take that last one. (P.S. Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus.)
Reflection
Drops of water reflect what surrounds us. Tears do the same. I was reflecting upon the beautiful blue sky of a Tuesday morning, 17 years ago. The day that changed the course of so many lives, including my own. Still rips me open. Every year. Without fail.
