It’s not about bunnies, or brightly colored eggs.
It’s not about candy or traditional meals and it’s not even about family gatherings.
It’s about forgiveness.
And it’s for everyone, not just a select few. Even for those of us who celebrate Easter as Christians, that simple message can be lost among baskets of sweet chocolate covered treats, or egg hunts. But the truth is, there is nothing sweeter than to give or receive forgiveness. It comes from the unconditional love that we are called to live our lives with, and it dwells deep within each of us, waiting to be uncovered and brought into the light.
It’s not always easy to arrive at forgiveness, but maybe that’s why Jesus’ death on the cross is so important and poignant. It was undoubtedly a painful and heart wrenching moment, but isn’t that often the case with the most difficult offenses to forgive?
We all are imperfect. We all falter. We all make mistakes; after all, we’re only human. But letting go of offenses, forgiving those who offend, and choosing to live in the present and not the past? That is a gift that is so fulfilling that the peace unwrapped in that moment has the fingerprints of God all over it.
Forgiveness is the first step on the path towards peace. That is what today is about.
May you experience both sides of the joy and love of Easter Forgiveness today, and every day.
