A week ago, I hopped on MetroNorth and headed down towards the Javits Center to attend NY NOW Home and Gift show. Last week I spoke a little bit about kicking off a Personal DIY Project, and you’ll hear more about that in the coming weeks. This week, though, I will focus on a few thoughts that I had while I was strolling through the aisles of beautifully displayed products.
I confess that I was a bit overwhelmed with the amount of exhibits at NY NOW, it being my first trade show and all. There was everything from home decor, giftware, handmade, and beyond. Toys, gadgets and things that I’m not quite sure of its purpose. Metals and woods, Industrial to Shabby Chic, Vintage to Modern- whatever your taste, there were things to drool over.
I was there with my friend, Dagmar. Her website’s niche is inspired by vintage, DIY and home decor, so we spent our time in the Home section, not even making it out to the other categories goods. I went without a plan, just an intention of seeing what moved me, what spoke to me.
I meandered through booth after booth, imagining odds and ends making a home in my kitchen, living room or bedroom. I pictured my daughter setting imaginary tables, or curled up in luxurious chairs reading a book with her legs draped over the arm of the chair. I visualized wine glasses clinking together with friends, or the cat lounging on a sunny spot of a gorgeous floor covering. Warmth, was the lingering feeling of my little daydreams.
Over and over again, I realized that it wasn’t so much the items that created the warmth, but the process of sharing them with loved ones and friends. Things are just things, but when they are paired with experiences and memories, they take on a story of their own. I rather like that, don’t you?
So, here is just a little tease with some of things that I imagined little story lines of existence. More this week, and I’ll share some thoughts about the HGTV Magazine Blogger Block Party that Dagmar and I attended after we exhausted ourselves at the NY NOW show. For now though, I’ll ask you this:
We’ve been working so hard to downsize, we don’t keep ANYTHING that doesn’t have a story attached to it. It sounds silly, but I’m so proud of our living room now – it’s full of little things and big things both that are full of stories. I love having people over to the house and when they see something that speaks to them and pick it up and turn it around in their hands, I can tell them the story behind it and they can relive it with us. It’s beautiful.
Absolutely, Kristin! You blog is full of stories behind your home, and I LOVE that! If it doesn’t have a story or serve a purpose, than it is just a wasted investment, taking up space. Of course, this does not apply to toys. I’ve tried to develop this way of thinking with my kiddo, but we are still years away from that maturity… and a tidy room! ; )
Hi Kelly, wasn’t that show fun? I wish we would have had another day to see more. It was such a lovely day with you.
