A while back, I had worked on a sock monkey design for a small project. My daughter was young at that time, and I was a stay at home mom attempting to keep my creative mind agile by selling a few things on Etsy. Setting up my traditional paints, oil pastels, or sketches were time consuming to prepare, so by the time the materials were laid out, nap time was practically ending. It took some time for me to really embrace digital designs, but once I did- I was hooked. I didn’t have much money, so the computer applications that I had on hand were very limited. I was innovative and determined to create as much as I could during those *precious* napping hours, so I taught myself how to create designs using… please don’t laugh… PowerPoint. Yes, it’s TRUE, the bones of the design you see above were created by using the tools found on PowerPoint. Since then, I’ve reworked some of it with Photoshop, and currently sell the designs on various different products online.
Sometimes, you don’t need to have the best tools of the trade to get your feet wet when you are trying something new. When you have a drive and a desire to really DO something, use what’s on hand until you know that you have fully outgrown those tools. Whether you want to become a more skilled cook in the kitchen, photographer, interior designer or social media guru, learn the basics first, then build upwards. Challenge yourself to push the limits of what you have in your toolbox before you start eyeing the best gadgets to arm yourself with.
