On July 19th, 2013, my daughter and I waved at Cassini.

NASA has been forced into silence today.

On a day when this amazing agency should be sharing messages of what it has done to help humankind, or how it continues to inspire collaborative international efforts in the name of science, it is silent.  It is silent because our elected officials have lost sight on what common goal they were working towards.  Instead of turning this post into a political rant, something I really do not wish to engage in, I want to take just a moment today to say how grateful I am for the daily inspiration that I receive from this government agency.  I am constantly awed by the discoveries made.  I am not an scientist, nor an engineer, but that doesn’t meant that I can’t appreciate this incredible planet that I live upon.

My daughter, however, one day may very well grow up to be a scientist, engineer, or astronaut.  Why?  Because NASA has provided countless opportunities to inspire her, the tools to help me educate her, and phenomenal resources to feed her curiosity.  For Halloween this year, she decided to be not only an astronaut, but she said that she will be the “first girl astronaut to walk on the moon.”  THAT is a direct result of how NASA has made itself available to the public.  By keeping 97% of their workforce at home, their hands have been tied and their voice is silenced.

SO… it is up to the grateful public, that they serve so selflessly, to be their voice today.

Happy Birthday, NASA.  Thank you for what you have done for the past 55 years, and what you will continue to do once you get your voice back.

Posted by NASA before they went quiet.
