As the summer comes to an end, I am so very blessed to have visited one of my favorite seaside towns (Cape May, NJ) several times this season. My computer is bursting at the seams with uploaded images from my trips, but occasionally, it is so very lovely to have something tangible to stir happy memories.
For that very reason, when I stepped into The Madd Potters’ Studio (324 Carpenters Lane, Cape May, NJ 08204) I knew that I had to go home with a mug… and a magnet… and a bowl… and eventually I had returned with my daughter, who just HAD to have an ornament for our Christmas Tree this year.
There is something so very special about a hand crafted piece of pottery. In high school, and once again in college, I had taken a few semesters of pottery. I confess that I never even came close to mastering the potter’s wheel, but it was something that I truly enjoyed doing. It seemed almost more like a class of mediation than of artistry.
So, now, when I am starting my day, I give me my weary body a jolt of caffeine, and I give my mind, a jolt of happy memories of Cape May, and of the days past of clay-covered hands.
